HP Printers - Installation Disc Does Not Start (Windows)
This document is for HP printers and Windows computers.
When you insert the software installation disc into a Windows computer, the install does not start automatically.
Step 1: Change the AutoPlay settings in Windows
To start the installation process as soon as the software disc is inserted, make sure AutoPlay is enabled.

Search Windows for control panel, and then press Enter.

Under Hardware and Sound, click AutoPlay.
The AutoPlay menu opens.

Make sure the AutoPlay feature is enabled for all devices. Select the check box if the option is not selected.

Click Save.

Insert the printer software installation disc into the disc drive.

If the installation starts automatically, follow the on-screen instructions to install the printer software.

If the installation window does not display, continue to the next step.

Step 2: Run the Setup file from the disc
If the disc does not start automatically, open the disc contents from File Explorer, and then open the Setup file.

Search Windows for computer, and then press Enter.
File Explorer or This PC opens.

Double-click the CD drive.
The disc contents display in the right pane of the window.

Double-click the Setup file.
The installer window opens.
note:
If nothing happens when you double-click Setup, the CD might be damaged or unusable. Skip to the step to check the disc for damage.

Follow the on-screen instructions to install the printer software.
If these steps did not resolve the issue, continue to the next step.
Step 3: Copy the contents of the installation disc to the hard drive
If the printer software does not install from the installation disc, copy the contents of the disc to the hard drive, and then install the software.
caution:Before copying the files, make sure your hard drive has enough free disk space to hold all the files from the installation disc.

Search Windows for computer, and then press Enter.
File Explorer or This PC opens.

Double-click the C: drive.

Click New Folder, type HP Software to name the new folder, and then press Enter.

In File Explorer, click the disc drive.
The disc contents display in the right pane of the window.

Press CTRL and A to select all the files, and then press CTRL and C to copy all the files.

Click the C: drive, and then open the HP Software folder you created in a previous step.

Press CTRL and V to paste the files.
note:
If a Cannot copy from source disk or drive or Cannot copy specified file error message displays, the software CD might be damaged or unusable. Skip to the next step.

Search Windows for Run, and then press Enter.

In the Run window, type C:\HP Software\setup.exe, and then press Enter.
note:
If C:\HP Software\setup.exe is not found, type C:\HP Software\hpzsetup.exe instead, and then press Enter.
The installer window opens.

Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.

Once the software is installed, delete the HP Software folder you created.
If these steps did not resolve the issue, continue to the next step.
Step 4: Check the installation disc and disc drive for damage
The computer disc drive might not be able to read the installation disc if it is dirty, or the disc drive might be broken. Clean the installation disc, and then check for damage.

Remove the software disc from the disc drive.

Inspect the installation disc for any damage.

If the disc is scratched, try to clean or repair the disc. Most home electronics stores offer repair and cleaning kits for discs at minimal cost.

Reinsert the software disc in the disc drive, and then follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
note:
If cleaning the disc did not resolve the issue, try playing other discs, such as a music CDs or DVDs, one at a time. If the computer does not read any other discs, contact the computer or CD drive manufacturer.
If these steps did not resolve the issue, continue to the next step.
Step 5: Order a new installation disc from HP
If the installation disc is damaged, order a new installation disc from the HP website.

Click Order Physical Media-CD/DVD/USB, and then click Order Media.

Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the order.
